Kerkrade-West gathers 14,400 residents into six neighbourhoods along the German border, from Terwinselen to Kaalheide. Amenities still reach 8.0, but the rest of the numbers are bleak: housing sinks to 3.1, social cohesion to 3.7 and the overall to 3.6. Safety and nature hold just short of a pass at 5.4 and 5.0. This is old mining country, and the scores show its structural disadvantages.
