About Check je wijk

Where you live shapes a lot: your commute, your neighbours, the school around the corner, what your house will be worth. Yet most people pick a neighbourhood on gut feeling and two viewings.

Check je wijk puts all public data about every Dutch neighbourhood in one place, measured the same way. So you can fairly compare a neighbourhood in Groningen with one in Maastricht — especially useful if you’re new to the Netherlands and don’t know the cities yet.

The site uses only open data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the police, the public health institute RIVM and the Kadaster. How the grades are calculated is documented on the method page.

Who is behind the site

Check je wijk is published by LP Ventures in Amsterdam, registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) under number 73959049. The site is built and edited by Laurens — not a newsroom of ten, but one maker who checks every source and writes every line himself. No municipality, estate agent or investor is involved.

We collect nothing about neighbourhoods ourselves and buy no data: everything comes from public sources. From those source figures we build grades by comparing each neighbourhood, on every measure, with every other neighbourhood in the country — so an 8 does not mean “good” in the abstract, but better than most. Which measures count, which deliberately do not, and why, is written out measure by measure on the method page.

Those sources are published once a year, and we move to a new edition as soon as it is complete. Every measure shows which year it is from, and the bottom of the method page records when the data and the model were last updated — so you never have to guess how old a number is. If we find an error, we correct it and note on the method page what changed.

You can reach the editor at info@checkjewijk.nl — for questions, press enquiries, and above all for figures you believe are wrong. Name the neighbourhood and what looks off, and we will look into it. More ways to reach us are on the contact page; we usually respond within two working days.
