Privacy and cookies
This site measures as little as possible. What we do measure is set out below, in plain language: what it is, why it is there, and how to switch it off.
Who we are
Check je wijk (checkjewijk.nl) is an independent Dutch site that makes public data about every Dutch neighbourhood accessible. Questions about privacy, or a request about your data? Email info@checkjewijk.nl. We are the data controller for the processing described here.
What we measure by default — without consent
For our own visitor statistics we use Umami, which we host on our own server. In practice that means:
- no cookies, nothing stored on your device;
- no fingerprinting: we build no profile from your screen, fonts or other device characteristics;
- no cross-site tracking: we cannot see where you go before or after this site;
- aggregated counts only — how many people viewed which page, on what kind of device, from which source. Your IP address is not stored.
This does not identify individual visitors, so no consent is required and this measurement continues even if you decline below.
What we measure only with your consent
If you press ‘Accept’ in the bar at the bottom, we load Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-6R144KY8QE). There is one reason: to be able to work with advertising partners, who want to see traffic data from a recognised source before accepting a site. Google then sets cookies (_ga, _ga_*) and processes, among other things, your (truncated) IP address, the pages you view, your device and approximate location on its own servers. See Google’s privacy policy.
If you decline, or do nothing, no Google script is loaded and no request is made to Google at all. We use Google Consent Mode v2: every consent signal is set to ‘denied’ by default until you choose otherwise.
Advertising (coming soon)
There are no advertisements on the site right now. When that changes — we are looking at Mediavine and Google AdSense — consent will work the same way: nothing loads until you say yes. Advertising networks nowadays bring their own, legally required consent dialogue; when that happens we will update this page and that dialogue replaces the bar you see today.
Retention
- Your choice in the bar — 6 months, after which we ask again.
- Umami statistics — aggregated, no personal data, so no retention period tied to you.
- Google Analytics events — 14 months at most; that is the longest period Google allows for this data.
Cookies and storage on this site
| Name | Purpose | Retention | Consent needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
cjw_consent_ads | Cookie. Remembers whether you accepted or declined ad measurement | 6 months | No — functional |
cjw-weights-v1 | Not a cookie but local storage in your own browser: your pillar weighting. Never sent to a server | until you clear it | No — functional |
_ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics 4: visitor measurement for advertising purposes | up to 2 years | Yes — only after ‘Accept’ |
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction and objection, and to data portability. Because we collect no data that identifies you by default, there is usually little to access — but do email info@checkjewijk.nl and we will look into it.
You can withdraw consent at any time, as easily as you gave it: at the bottom of every page. If we cannot resolve things together, you may lodge a complaint with the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
Changes
Last updated: 12 August 2026. We announce changes on this page; if they concern what we measure, we will ask for your choice again.
