District or neighbourhood — what is the difference?

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) splits every municipality into districts ("wijken") and every district into neighbourhoods ("buurten"). A neighbourhood is the smallest of the three and is the level at which almost every figure on this site is published.

That is why the answer you get here is a neighbourhood, with the district and municipality above it. The name your postman or your estate agent uses may differ: those are everyday names, not the official CBS division of 2025.

Frequently asked

How do I find out which neighbourhood I live in?

Type your address or postcode in the search box on this page and pick the suggestion. You land on the report for the CBS neighbourhood that covers that address, with the district and municipality named above it.

What is the difference between a wijk and a buurt?

A municipality is divided into districts (wijken) and every district into neighbourhoods (buurten). The Netherlands currently has 3,474 districts and 14,667 neighbourhoods. A neighbourhood is the smallest unit and the level at which CBS publishes its figures.

Does the neighbourhood name match my postcode?

Not always. Postcodes follow delivery routes, CBS neighbourhoods follow statistical boundaries, so one postcode can straddle two neighbourhoods. Searching on the full address is more precise than searching on the postcode alone.
